Learning and Development at Little Foxes Maghull

Encouraging Curiosity, Creativity, and Confidence in Every Child

At Little Foxes Maghull, we believe that every child’s learning journey begins the moment they walk through our doors. Our carefully curated Play to Progress Curriculum focuses on what matters most, helping children feel happy, safe, and confident as they grow.

We understand that children learn best when they feel secure and supported. That’s why creating a warm, nurturing environment is at the heart of everything we do. Through a balance of guided learning and child-led exploration, we encourage curiosity, independence, and a genuine love for learning from the very start.

Our environments are thoughtfully designed to inspire little minds, whether that’s through hands-on play, outdoor adventures, or meaningful interactions with caring adults. Every experience is tailored to your child’s individual stage of development, helping them build confidence and thrive in their own unique way.

Our Curriculum

At Little Foxes, we’ve carefully curated our own curriculum, focusing on seven key areas of learning. These areas form the heart of our approach, ensuring every aspect of your child’s development is nurtured and supported in a holistic, engaging, and fun environment. These areas guide your child’s learning, preparing them for future success in school and life, while promoting independence, confidence, curiosity, and emotional resilience.

Our approach is built around five key pillars:

Children Feel Happy, Safe and Secure

We create a nurturing environment where children feel comfortable, valued, and ready to explore. By building strong relationships and consistent routines, children develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of self.

Emotional Resilience

We support children in understanding their feelings, building positive relationships, and learning how to overcome challenges. Through gentle guidance, children develop empathy, problem-solving skills, and the confidence to keep trying when things feel difficult.

Care for the Environment

We encourage children to develop a love and respect for the world around them. From outdoor play to simple eco-friendly habits, children learn how to care for nature, share resources, and appreciate their environment.

Steps to School Readiness

We gently prepare children for their next stage by building essential life skills. From developing independence to recognising their name and managing everyday tasks, we help children feel confident and ready for the transition to school.

Ages and Stages Development

Every child develops at their own pace, and we celebrate that. Our team works closely with families to support each child’s individual journey, focusing on key areas such as communication, physical development, and early problem-solving skills.

The Seven Areas of Learning

Alongside our core pillars, we follow the EYFS Development Matters guidance, supporting children across seven key areas of learning:

Image
Communication and Language

We create a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to express themselves, listen, and build confidence in their communication through stories, songs, and everyday conversations.

Image
Physical Development

Through active play and hands-on experiences, children develop strength, coordination, and independence—both in big movements and fine motor skills.

Image
Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED)

We support children in building friendships, understanding their emotions, and developing the confidence to navigate the world around them.

Literacy

By introducing books, storytelling, and early phonics in a fun and engaging way, we nurture a lifelong love of reading and writing.

Mathematics

Children explore numbers, shapes, and patterns through play-based learning that builds confidence and problem-solving skills.

Understanding the World

We encourage curiosity about the world through exploration, nature, and learning about people, communities, and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design

Creativity is celebrated through music, art, role play, and imaginative activities that allow children to express themselves freely.

Outdoor Learning and Play

Outdoor play is integral to our approach at Little Foxes Maghull. We believe that children learn best when they have the freedom to explore their environment and engage with nature. That’s why 80% of our day is spent outside.

Through outdoor play, children develop motor coordination, strengthen their physical abilities, and engage in imaginative experiences that build social skills and problem-solving. Our large outdoor area is designed to provide these rich learning experiences, offering ample room for movement and exploration, fostering a sense of freedom and self-confidence.

Learning Through Play

At Little Foxes Maghull, we understand the importance of learning through play. Research has shown that play is essential for the healthy development of children. It helps them build important cognitive, emotional, and social skills in a natural and enjoyable way. Our play-based approach means that children are engaged and excited about their learning.

We create opportunities for both structured play (activities led by adults) and free play (child-led activities). This balance allows children to follow their own interests, develop independence, and make choices. It also gives them the chance to explore, experiment, and learn through trial and error.

Supporting Each Child’s Unique Journey

We know that every child is different. That’s why we tailor our activities and learning approaches to meet the needs and interests of each child. Our staff observe each child closely to understand their strengths, challenges, and preferences, adapting our teaching style to suit their individual learning styles.

Children are encouraged to work at their own pace, and we celebrate their achievements, no matter how big or small. Whether a child is mastering a new skill or simply enjoying a moment of discovery, we provide the guidance and support they need to continue growing.

Partnership with Parents

We believe that parents are a child’s first teachers, and we actively involve families in the learning process. Through regular updates, parent consultations, and an open-door policy, we ensure that you are always informed about your child’s progress and learning journey. We encourage open communication to build a partnership that supports your child’s development both at nursery and at home. We also provide Brain Box, our online learning portal, to share learning experiences and support children’s development at home.
